World Cup: 26,000 tickets for public for India-South Africa tie

NAGPUR: With around 26,000 tickets up for grabs for India's World Cup tie against South Africa on March 12, the chances of Nagpur going the Bangalore way are quite unlikely.

Bangalore witnessed a lathicharge on fans who were angry after being deprived of tickets despite queuing up for a long time. After successfully organizing two practice matches and three games in World Cup 2011, Vidarbha Cricket Association president Sudhir Dabir & Co are all set for their biggest challenge. VCA's stadium at Jamtha has a capacity of 44,900 seats and 58% tickets are available to the general public at effective prices.

The ticket sales of North and South wings for the general public will begin on March 8 at the Bank of Maharashtra counter at the old VCA Stadium in Civil Lines.

The tickets of East and West wings stand tickets will be sold through counters at Bishop Cotton School on the same day. Ticket sales exclusively for VCA members will be between March 5 and 7 from 9am to 5.30pm.

"We are the only association in the country which is providing such a large number of tickets to the general public. It will be a spectator-friendly World Cup as far as VCA is concerned. We are making sure that everything is in place and expect the same cooperation from the public," said Dabir on Thursday.

He added that members of the public can avail of tickets anywhere in the stadium subject to availability. The VCA has tickets ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 4,000.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association had 20,000 tickets, including those available online, for the general public in Bangalore while the Mumbai Cricket Association has only 3,000 open tickets for the final.
